Four grounding techniques for a tense day

3-1

A tense day sometimes leaves us with thoughts that will not stop. There are simple grounding techniques that bring attention back to the present moment and help us unwind. The article collects four of them, together with a small evening ritual that complements them.

What is grounding?

Grounding involves focusing on sensory experiences to anchor your attention in the present moment. It is useful when the mind keeps returning to worries about the future or to past events. Here are a few grounding techniques you can try:

1-2
Deep breathing

Deep breathing is one of the simplest and most effective grounding techniques. Slowly inhale through your nose and exhale through your mouth, repeating several times as you focus on your breathing. This technique helps reduce stress and gives a sense of control.

Stimulation of the vagus nerve

The vagus nerve is part of the parasympathetic nervous system, which regulates stress responses. Many people find that it relaxes them after a tense day. Try humming or singing in a low tone to activate the vagus nerve. Another method is physical „shaking“, which can help release built-up energy and tension.

Emotional Freedom Techniques (EFT)

Emotional freedom techniques, also known as „tapping“, combine principles from Chinese acupressure and modern psychology. By tapping specific points on the body while focusing on negative emotions or stressful thoughts, many people find that it gives them a sense of calm.

3-1
Visualization of a safe place

Visualisation is another powerful grounding technique. Close your eyes and imagine a place that gives you a sense of calm and safety. With practice you will be able to return easily to this mentally safe place when the day is tense.

Evening care after a tense day

After such a day it is good to set aside a few minutes for yourself. Apply a BulCanna balm to your neck, shoulders or hands and rub it in with slow massaging movements. The warmth of your hands, the scent and the slow rhythm are part of grounding: attention returns to the skin and the breath.

Combine the breathing, the visualisation and the small evening ritual in whatever way suits you. There is no right order. What matters is to pause for a moment and feel the moment.
